AUGUST KARL HERMANN LOBEGEIGER

August Karl Hermann Lobegeiger was born in the north of Prussia at Templin, Uckermark, in the year 1859.  August was 3 years old when he came to Australia and grew up in the Harrisvale area.

It was here that he met Christina Schneider who was born in Wurtenburg, Germany in 1864.
On the 23rd of February 1881, August and Christina were married at Harrisvale.

The town in flood!

"Soon after their marriage the young couple moved to the Fassifern Scrub area and took up residence in the town of Templin, five kilometres west of Boonah.  It is interesting to note that August was born in a town of the same name back in Prussia and it is not hard to imaging from the family names in the area that the German settlers wanted some of their heritage preserved.

August and Christina had fourteen children during their life together; unfortunately the names of a son and daughter who died in infancy were never recorded.

In 1897 August and his family moved to the banks of King's Creek on the Darling Downs.

As the land had been cleared for farming, firewood for the stoves had to be collected from a nearby hill.  Those wood collecting trips were normally day outings with the family collecting enough to fill a wagon before returning home.  It was on one of these trips that August met his neighbour when hearing shouts in German about a hare.  The other family's name was Kratzmann and, as can be seen from the marriage list, a lasting friendship developed.

August must have been a fisherman of note in the area as he had the nickname of "Kingfisher".  With one of his sons he would often make the 80 kilometre journey to "Kent's Lagoon" on horseback.  They would take four horses, two as pack animals, set their nets and return the following day.   It is said that the horses knew their own way home as the men often slept in their saddles on the return journey home.

1909 saw August on the move again, this time to the area of Boonara.  From the diary of Bill Kratzmann, an eyewitness to the move, we can imagine what it was like.   (near Goomeri/Tansey)

"Lobegeiger sold their farm and bought up good cows in the district.  They got everything ready to march after the New Year.  All ready for the big trek" the old man and eldest daughter in the sulky took the lead, Dan in the big wagon, hour horses in the team seconds.

Two girls Rose and Ricka with two horses in the German wagon third place.  Julius and Gotlieb on horseback driving the stock and away they went."  Mrs Lobegeiger and the four youngest girls followed 12 months later.

August would go ahead and pick out a campsite for each day.  The cows were milked once a day on the journey.

On arrival in the Murgon area, August purchased his farm and remained there till 1918 when he moved to Nikenbah.  From there he moved to Bundaberg, then to Murgon where he had a boarding house.

He and Christina stayed there until they died.     As at July 31st 1981,  August and Christina's descendants amount to 572."      Written by Noel Lobegeiger.

Kents Lagoon is a locality in the Scenic Rim Region of Queensland, Australia.

In the south east of the locality elevations rise to 140 m at Obum Obum Hill. Warrill Creek marks the western boundary of Kents Lagoon. To the east of Warrill Creek lies Kents Lagoon. The lagoon was named by Dr. Leichhardt after F. Kent, the then owner of Fassifern station. Irrigated farms in the area first went to auction in January 1906

From this family there were several marriages with the Kratzmann lines.

The Kratzmanns arrived in Australia with a large family:
